One week before the 2020 presidential election, I interviewed Carlo Barrera, a 27-year-old Dreamer, originally brought to the US when he was 6-years old from Queretaro, Mexico.
I had him on the show for a couple reasons. 1, I wanted to know more about the Dream Act from a personal perspective and 2, to try and humanize policy. We, and when I say we I mostly mean I, often don't realize that legislation and policies enacted by our officials have consequences that affect people's lives. It's easy to dismiss the magnitute of such policies when we don't have a personal connection to them.
Our interview today is a follow up 3+ weeks post election to get a pulse on how he and 750,000 other similar Dreamers are feeling and what the next steps are as they hope for a pathway to permanent citizenship.
I have learned, as I have had him in my home for the past 6 days, that he is a fine young man who has a track record of doing good and contributing to the greatness that is America. He is the embodiment of the merits of this legislation.
